A broad smooth zone runs through the center and left of this 3.04ct oval, where the stone turns soft and milky and stops returning sharp light altogether. Around it the outer facets stay bright and the blue is clear, so the effect is of a pale cloudy window set into an otherwise lively stone. It shows plainly in the photograph and is the defining feature here. Clarity is graded VS, with the cloudiness reading as diffused light rather than as distinct inclusions.
Cloudiness of this kind is natural to topaz and is why the material is so often graded VS; it is part of how the crystal grew. Set in a mount with an open back, light entering from behind softens the contrast between the clear and cloudy areas considerably. This is Brazilian topaz colored by irradiation and heating. Blue topaz is a December birthstone.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
