A touch more saturated than the palest ovals in the run, this 3.11ct stone carries a softer, milkier center where the light diffuses instead of reflecting cleanly, with brighter facets ringing it. Fine surface marks show on the crown under direct light. The blue itself is even and the 10x8mm outline is accurately cut with a level girdle. Clarity is VS, the softness being in how the stone returns light rather than in anything discrete inside.
A diffuse center is common in commercial ovals and comes from the depth of the pavilion relative to the table; it reads as a gentle glow. This is Brazilian topaz colored by irradiation and heating. The stone lifts noticeably once it is set and catching light from more than one direction. December recognizes blue topaz among its stones.
Natural sky blue topaz, 3.11ct oval, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
