Drilled heart-shaped blue topaz at 4.9x5.7mm, sold by the stone. Each one is bored through from the cleft to the point so it can hang directly from a wire or a chain without a setting, and the channel is clearly visible through the pale icy blue. The photograph shows four together so the consistency of color and shape can be judged. Faceting is a simple brilliant arrangement and the material is bright and transparent at VS.
Drilling turns a faceted stone into a component: no claws, no bezel, just a jump ring or a headpin through the hole. Brazilian topaz is irradiated and then heated to reach this blue. Hearts of this size go into charm bracelets, small pendants and threaded earrings, and they are priced individually so a maker can take the exact number needed. Blue topaz is one of December's birthstones.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
