This champagne topaz sits at the pale end of the warm topaz range, a light greyish-tan with golden-brown flashes that surface where the pavilion facets catch the light. The 9x7.1mm oval is shallow enough to stay bright, and viewed at an angle the crown picks up warm honey tones while the center keeps a gentle, slightly milky softness. Clarity is VS, with fine natural veiling through the middle under close light rather than distinct inclusions. It is a quiet stone, more toasted neutral than yellow.
This is Brazilian material, irradiated and heated to fix the warm champagne shade, the same process behind most colored topaz on the market. The muted tone is easy to wear and works particularly well in white metal, where the grey undertone reads as smoky rather than brown. About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
