Icy and very clean, this 0.91ct round is the crispest of the smaller stones, with a sharply radiating star and bright white flashes running out between the pavilion facets. The blue is pale and cool but clearly present, and it holds steady across the whole 6mm face. Clarity is VS with nothing visible inside at any angle. The polish is bright and the circle is accurately cut.
A clean, lively small round is the one to keep back for a matched pair, since earrings are seen from a distance and it is brightness rather than size that registers. This is Brazilian topaz, irradiated and then heated. At 6mm it fits stock stud settings without adjustment. Blue topaz is one of the three stones December recognizes.
Natural light blue topaz, 0.91ct round, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
