Bright and cleanly cut at 6.1mm, this 1.06ct round carries a light even blue with a well-formed star and strong light return across the crown. A small pale inclusion sits low on the left side, reading as a faint whitish speck rather than a dark one. Clarity is VS and the rest of the interior is clear. The outline is a true circle with sharply met facet junctions.
Pale inclusions are far less obtrusive than dark ones in a light stone, because they sit close to the body color instead of contrasting against it. This is irradiated and heated Brazilian topaz. At 6.1mm the stone works as a pendant on its own or as the center of a small cluster. Blue topaz belongs to December.
Natural light blue topaz, 1.06ct round, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
