Quiet and evenly cut, this 1.49ct round has a well-centered star and a gentle spread of pale blue that stays consistent from the table out to the girdle. Contrast is moderate, neither the hard flash of the crisper stones nor the softness of the milkier ones, which makes it the most typical of the group. Clarity is VS with a clean interior. The 7mm circle is accurate and the polish is even all round.
Where a design calls for several matching stones, the middle of a parcel is what to buy: the outliers in tone and cut are harder to pair up later. This is Brazilian topaz colored by irradiation and heating. A 7mm round fits the widest range of stock settings of any size in the group. Blue topaz is among the stones December recognizes.
Natural light blue topaz, 1.49ct round, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
