Fine natural veiling runs through the left side of this 1.52ct round, showing as a faint cloudiness rather than as distinct inclusions, and it softens the light return on that side of the crown. The rest of the stone is a clean pale blue with a well-centered star and even color to the girdle. Clarity is VS. At 7.1mm the outline is generous for the weight and the polish is bright throughout.
Veiling of this kind is a normal feature of topaz and is the reason so much of the material is graded VS rather than higher; it belongs to the crystal itself. This is Brazilian rough irradiated and then heated. Set with the veiled side toward a claw, it goes unnoticed. Blue topaz is a December birthstone.
Natural light blue topaz, 1.52ct round, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
