The pavilion of this 1.58ct round throws a broad radiating burst rather than a tight star, the facets fanning out from the center in long pale wedges that reach almost to the girdle. Contrast is softer than on the crisper stones in the group and there is a slight haze through the middle. The blue is very light and even. Clarity is VS, with the softness coming from how the light spreads rather than from anything inside.
A wide radiating pattern suits a stone that will be seen straight on, in a pendant or a stud, where the fan of light fills the whole face. This is Brazilian topaz colored by irradiation and a subsequent heating. Seven millimetres is a standard size for stock settings. Anyone with a December birthday can claim blue topaz as their stone.
Natural light blue topaz, 7mm round, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
