Strong contrast defines this 1.60ct round: a crisply cut star sits against noticeably darker surrounding facets, so the pattern reads clearly rather than dissolving into the pale body color. The blue leans very slightly green, which shows most at the edges of the crown. Clarity is VS with a clean interior. At 7.1mm the stone is well proportioned, with an even girdle and sharp facet junctions.
The greener side of pale blue takes to yellow gold better than the grey-leaning stones do, since the warmth of the metal pushes a cool grey towards flat but flatters a green-blue. Brazilian topaz reaches its color through irradiation followed by heating. A well-defined star is a sign the pavilion was cut with care. Blue topaz belongs to December.
Natural light blue topaz, 1.60ct round, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
