A shade more saturated than most of the light blue group, this 1.61ct round carries a clearer blue with better contrast between the bright star and the surrounding facets. A small dark point sits toward the right side and a fine dark line runs briefly in from the upper left, both visible on close inspection and consistent with the VS grade. The 7mm outline is accurately round and the polish is bright.
Inclusions show more readily in a pale stone than in a deep one, since there is no depth of color to absorb them, which is worth knowing before comparing clarity across different tones of the same gem. This is irradiated and heated Brazilian topaz. Neither mark here reaches the center or affects how the stone wears. December counts blue topaz among its stones.
Natural light blue topaz, 1.61ct round, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
