A small golden-amber crystal sits just above the center of this 4mm London blue round, a warm point set against vivid teal and easy to pick out once you know where to look. The blue around it is bright and evenly saturated, with a clean star opening through the table and strong turquoise flashes at the edges. The rest of the interior is clear, and the round outline is neatly cut with a bright polish.
Included crystals of this kind are a normal part of what natural topaz produces, and in a stone this small they read as a single warm speck rather than anything spreading. Turned under a claw, it disappears. Brazilian topaz is irradiated and then heated to reach London blue. December counts blue topaz among its birthstones.
Natural London blue topaz with a natural crystal inclusion, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
