Saturated and cool, this 4mm London blue sits at the darker end of the group, with a well-defined star cutting through a body color deep enough to read as ink where the facets fold under. The contrast between that star and the surrounding blue is what carries the stone at this size. Clarity is VS and the interior is clean. The circular outline is precise and the facets meet cleanly.
Deeper small rounds do their best work as the darkest note in a graduated row, where the eye reads the step from pale to deep. Colorless Brazilian topaz becomes this blue through irradiation and heating, permanently. White metal keeps the tone cold; yellow gold warms it noticeably even at 4mm. Blue topaz is a December birthstone.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
