Softer and greyer than the vivid stones in the group, this 0.36ct round has a lightly frosted surface texture that scatters the light rather than returning it sharply, so the blue reads muted and the star through the table is less defined. The tone is pale for the London designation, more steel than teal. Clarity is VS and the interior itself is clean. The 4mm outline is neatly cut with an even girdle.
A surface like this sharpens considerably with a repolish, and topaz takes one easily, so a jeweller setting the stone has a straightforward option if more brightness is wanted. This is irradiated and heated Brazilian material. At 4mm it fits any standard accent setting as it is. Blue topaz is a December birthstone.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
