Even and medium-toned, this 5x4mm London blue avoids both the near-black center of the darker stones and the paleness of the lighter ones, landing on a clear teal that stays readable from any angle. A small dark point sits near the center of the crown and a fine dark line runs briefly in from the lower left edge, both visible only on close examination and both in line with VS. The oval is neatly cut with a bright polish.
This middle depth of London blue is the easiest of the small stones to match, which matters when a design calls for several. Brazilian topaz reaches the color through irradiation and a subsequent heating that fixes it permanently. At 4.9x3.9mm it fits standard accent settings. Blue topaz is the December birthstone most people recognize.
Natural London blue topaz, 5x4mm oval, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
