Deep and vivid at 5mm, this 0.58ct London blue round holds a saturated teal that fills the whole stone, with a bright star opening through the table and darker blue gathering in the outer facets. A small pale inclusion sits just left of the center, showing as a fine light point against the color and in line with the VS grade. The blue does not thin toward the girdle. Cutting is clean and the polish is bright.
The 5mm size is where London blue starts to look like a color in its own right rather than a dark dot, which is why it is a common choice for stud earrings. Brazilian topaz is irradiated and then heated, and the color holds indefinitely. An open-back setting lets light through and keeps a deep stone from going flat. December counts blue topaz among its birthstones.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
