Vivid and lively at 5mm, this 0.61ct round is brighter and more turquoise than most stones sold under the London name, sitting closer to the middle of the blue range than to its dark end. Light comes back strongly across the crown with a well-defined star through the table and no dead center. Clarity is VS with a clean interior. The circle is accurately cut and the polish is bright on every facet.
The London designation covers a fair spread of tone, and the brighter end of it is the easier one to wear in daylight. Brazilian topaz is irradiated and then heated to reach its blue, permanently. Five millimetres is a common stud and accent size, so settings are straightforward. Blue topaz is one of the stones December recognizes.
Natural London blue topaz, bright 5mm round, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
