Cleanly formed and evenly proportioned, this 1.41ct heart has a neat central cleft and closely matched lobes, with a bright X of light crossing the middle of the crown. The blue is a deep teal that stays saturated out to the edges rather than paling at the shoulders, which is where hearts most often lose color. Clarity is VS and nothing is visible inside. Both lobes and the point are sharply finished.
Symmetry is the hardest thing to get right in a heart, and an even cleft with matched lobes is worth more than a fraction of a carat. Brazilian topaz reaches this depth through irradiation followed by heating. At 7mm across, the shape reads clearly at a distance, which is the point of buying a heart in the first place. Blue topaz belongs to December.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
