Deep and richly colored, this 1.45ct heart holds a saturated teal blue with strong light return through the center of the crown. The right shoulder carries a visible chip near the top of the lobe, a small bite out of the edge that a claw in that position covers, and the cleft between the lobes sits slightly off-center. The color itself is even and strong from the cleft down to the point. Clarity is VS with a clean interior.
Heart cuts lose a great deal of rough in the shaping, which is why they turn up mostly in affordable material. The shoulders and the point are the exposed parts of the outline and are usually the first to take a knock, as here. This is Brazilian topaz colored by irradiation and heating. A three-claw mount gripping both shoulders and the point protects every vulnerable edge at once. December counts blue topaz among its birthstones.
Natural London blue topaz, 1.45ct heart cut, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
