Deep and saturated, this London blue topaz holds a rich petrol teal right across the stone, with bright turquoise flaring around the rim and a darker steel blue gathering over the table. The color stays blue throughout rather than dropping away in the center, and the least movement lights the edges up. The oval measures 6.9x5.7mm with a slightly high crown that carries the depth of tone. Fine natural inclusions and a small nick on the lower girdle show up on close examination, both in line with VS clarity.
Brazil reaches this depth of blue by irradiating and heating colorless topaz, and London is the darkest of the three standard shades. Stones like this suit oxidized silver, white gold, or any setting that plays to the darker end of blue rather than fighting it. Just over a carat in a 7x5mm oval is a natural fit for a solitaire pendant. For a December birthday, blue topaz is the most accessible of the month's three options.
Natural London blue topaz, December birthstone, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
