The deepest of the 7x5mm ovals despite being the lightest in weight, this 0.80ct stone holds a strong dark teal with real contrast between the near-black recesses and the bright turquoise facets around them. The color carries all the way to the girdle without thinning at the ends. Clarity is VS and the interior reads clean. The cut is a shade shallower than its neighbours, which is where the weight difference has gone.
A shallower stone spreads more color across the same outline, so it looks bigger and darker face-up than the carat figure suggests. Colorless Brazilian rough is irradiated and then heated to reach this depth. Deep London blue is the shade most people picture when they hear the name, and it sits particularly well in white metal. December claims blue topaz among its birthstones.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
