Medium in tone with a grey lean, this 0.81ct oval sits between the pale and the deep stones in the group. Light returns unevenly across the crown, brighter along the upper facets and hazier through the lower half, which gives the stone a slightly veiled quality when it is held still and lifts as soon as it moves. Clarity is VS. The 7x5mm outline is well proportioned and the girdle runs even all round.
Uneven light return usually comes from small differences in how the pavilion facets were laid out, and it is common in commercial cutting where speed matters more than perfect optics. This is irradiated and heated Brazilian topaz. In a ring, where the stone is constantly moving, the effect is barely noticeable. Blue topaz is a December birthstone.
Natural London blue topaz, 0.81ct oval, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
