Softer and greyer than the vivid stones cut to the same 7x5mm size, this 0.89ct oval spreads its light across broad open facets rather than breaking it into small flashes. A fine curled mark sits on the left of the crown and a small dark point low in the stone, both visible only on close inspection and in keeping with VS. The blue is muted and steady, closer to steel than to teal, and it stays even from end to end.
A quieter, greyer blue is easier to wear every day than a vivid one, because it reads as a neutral against most clothing rather than announcing itself. This is Brazilian topaz colored by irradiation and a follow-up heating. The standard oval size drops into ready-made settings. December recognizes blue topaz among its stones.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
