Vivid teal blue with plenty of light coming back through the crown, this 6.8x5.4mm oval carries one genuinely distinctive feature: a fan of fine internal fractures spreading up from the girdle at one end, edged with a warm brown-gold iridescence where the planes catch the light. It reads as a small bronze-toned plume inside an otherwise bright blue stone. The rest of the oval is evenly colored and clean, with strong white flashes across the upper crown. Set with that end toward the base of a pendant or under a claw, the feature sits largely out of view.
London blue topaz is Brazilian material irradiated and heated to reach this depth of color. An included feature like this one is part of what natural topaz turns up, and here it gives the stone a character a clean blue oval does not have. At 7x5mm it drops into standard settings without custom work. December counts blue topaz among its birthstones.
Natural London blue topaz, oval cut, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
