Bolder in color than most of the run, this 1.75ct octagon holds a fuller blue in the step bands with strong dark-to-light alternation across the face. The saturation carries right into the corners rather than thinning out, which is what separates the deeper stones in a parcel from the pale ones. Cutting is crisp, with sharp step junctions and a flat, level table. Clarity is VS and the interior reads clean at normal viewing distance.
Where several stones are being set together, a deeper one like this works well as the center with paler octagons flanking it, since the tonal step is visible without being jarring. This is Brazilian topaz irradiated and then heated. The color is stable and needs no special care beyond keeping the stone away from hard knocks at the corners. December claims blue topaz as one of its birthstones.
Natural sky blue topaz, 1.75ct octagon, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
