Contrast is what this 1.79ct octagon has going for it: near-white through the center of the table, with deeper blue gathering at both ends of the stone. A small warm brown-olive fleck sits near the top edge of the table, a natural inclusion that shows against the pale ground but does not spread. Surface scuffing is light and only visible at an angle. The step facets are well defined and the corners are cut clean, with clarity in line with VS.
End-to-end contrast like this makes a stone look more alive than a flat pale one, which matters in a ring where the hand keeps moving. Irradiation followed by heating is what turns colorless Brazilian topaz this blue, and the result does not fade. An 8x6mm rectangle sits comfortably east-west across a finger. Blue topaz is the stone most often given for a December birthday.
Natural sky blue topaz, 1.79ct, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
