Cut as a classic octagon step, this 8x6mm sky blue topaz shows its color in clean horizontal bands, pale across the table and deepening through the stepped pavilion. The blue is light and cool, closer to the aquamarine end of the sky range than to a saturated blue. Fine polish lines are visible across the crown facets at an angle, normal for step-cut material at this price, and they do not show face-up. Clarity is VS and the interior reads clean to the eye.
Step cuts show color rather than sparkle, which is why they suit even, unzoned material like this. Brazilian topaz, irradiated and then heated, is the source of essentially all sky blue on the market. An 8x6mm octagon drops straight into ready-made settings, and the shape works particularly well in Art Deco style designs. December counts blue topaz among its birthstones.
Natural sky blue topaz, 8x6mm octagon, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
