The softest of the octagons in this group, this 1.88ct stone has a wide open table and low-contrast banding, so the pale blue spreads evenly instead of breaking into hard light and dark bars. The tone is very light throughout, closer to the color of ice than to a saturated sky. The material is clean, with nothing visible to the eye and only faint natural texture under close light, matching the VS grade. Corners and steps are cut evenly all round.
Very pale blue sits comfortably next to diamond or white topaz accents, where a stronger color would take over the whole piece. Brazilian rough irradiated and then heated is the origin of the entire sky blue range, from this pale end downward. A shallow, open stone like this looks best in a setting that lets light through from behind. Blue topaz is among the birthstones December recognizes.
Natural sky blue topaz, pale octagon, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
