A small olive-gold crystal sits in the lower left step of this 1.91ct octagon, a warm point of color against the pale blue and easy to find once you know it is there. The rest of the stone is a light, clean sky blue with even banding and no zoning down its length, and fine surface marks show only when it is tilted into the light. The steps are cut wide, the table is open, and the corners are clipped to match. Clarity is VS.
An included crystal in an otherwise clear stone is part of what natural topaz produces, and in a step cut there is no faceting busy enough to conceal it. Turned so the included corner sits under a claw, it disappears from the face-up view. This is Brazilian material colored by irradiation and a follow-up heating. Anyone born in December will find blue topaz on their birthstone list.
Natural sky blue topaz with a natural crystal inclusion, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
