The blue here leans further toward turquoise than most of the run, and the alternating dark bands and bright white center give this 1.93ct octagon a stronger horizontal structure than its neighbours. Steps are cut deep enough to hold that contrast rather than washing it out, and the table sits flat and open. A few tiny pinpoints show near the center left under close light, consistent with the VS grade. The polish is bright and the corners are cleanly matched.
The greener side of sky blue is easier to pair with warm metals than the grey-leaning stones, which is worth knowing if the setting is already chosen. This is irradiated and heated Brazilian topaz, colored permanently. The long rectangular outline suits drop earrings, where the stone hangs with its length vertical. Blue topaz belongs to December alongside tanzanite and zircon.
Natural sky blue topaz, 1.93ct step cut, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
