Fine parallel polish lines run across the upper crown facets of this 1.95ct octagon, catching the light at an angle and giving it a softer surface than its crisper neighbours. The blue underneath is a light, even sky tone with gentle banding through the steps and no zoning along the length. Face-up the stone reads calm and glassy rather than sparkling, which is what a step cut in pale material does. Clarity is VS, with the interior clear to the eye.
Surface polish varies stone to stone in commercial cutting, and topaz takes a repolish easily if a jeweller wants to sharpen it. The color comes from irradiating and then heating Brazilian rough. A bezel suits this one, since a continuous metal frame flatters a soft, glassy face better than claws do. Topaz is among the stones traditionally linked with Sagittarius, which covers late November into December.
Natural sky blue topaz, 1.95ct octagon, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
