Deeper and greyer than the paler stones in the run, this 1.97ct octagon puts more contrast between the bright table and the blue-grey steps framing it, so the banding reads strongly even at a distance. Fine scratches are visible on the crown under raking light, normal for commercial step-cut goods. A couple of small pinpoints sit toward the upper right, in keeping with VS. The outline is a clean rectangle with well-matched clipped corners.
A greyer, deeper blue wears better in low light than the very pale stones, which tend to disappear against skin. This is Brazilian topaz taken to color by irradiation and heating, a stable and permanent process. White gold or silver keeps the coolness of the tone; yellow gold pushes it warmer. For a December birthday, blue topaz is the most affordable of the month's three stones.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
