A small group of dark crystal inclusions sits low in this 2.07ct octagon, just left of center, with one or two more scattered above; they read as fine black specks against the pale blue and can be seen without magnification. The blue itself is even and a touch more saturated than the palest stones in the run, with crisp horizontal banding through the steps. Elsewhere the material is clear and the cutting is sharp, with clean corners and a level girdle. Set in a claw mount, the included end can be turned toward the base of a pendant.
Crystals like these are ordinary in topaz and have no effect on how the stone wears; in a step cut they simply have nowhere to hide, because the open table shows everything at once. Brazilian rough, irradiated and then heated, is what produces sky blue at this price. Being a calibrated 8x6mm, it fits ready-made settings straight away. December counts blue topaz among its stones.
Natural sky blue topaz, 8x6mm octagon, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
