The largest of the 8x6mm octagons at 2.13ct, and the palest, holding an icy blue so light it reads almost colorless across the middle of the table before gathering in the corner steps. Fine surface scuffing shows across the crown under angled light, more of it than on the stones cut alongside, though none of it registers face-up at normal distance. A small dark point sits near the top of the table, consistent with the VS grade. The steps are cut wide and the corners are evenly clipped.
Pale material is where octagon cutting earns its keep, since a step cut puts color and clarity on show instead of hiding them behind sparkle. Brazilian topaz is irradiated and then heated to fix the blue permanently. At 8x6mm it drops into any standard rectangular setting without adjustment. Blue topaz is one of December's birthstones.
Natural sky blue topaz, 2.13ct octagon, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
