A broad white star sits at the center of this trillion, thrown up by the pavilion and bright enough to register before the blue does. Around it the color is a clear medium sky blue that deepens along the three edges. A small notch shows at the top corner of the girdle, and a fine fracture line runs a short distance in from the lower right edge, catching light as a thin bright thread. Both are typical at this grade and neither reaches the center of the stone.
December birthdays are the obvious use for blue topaz, and at 8.7mm this one is large enough to carry a pendant on its own. The color comes from irradiating and then heating colorless Brazilian rough, the standard treatment for the material. The triangular outline also suits stud earrings, where the flat edge can sit horizontally.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
