A softer, greyer reading of sky blue, this 8.8mm trillion sits a shade back from the brighter stones cut from the same parcel, with a gentle blue that thins noticeably toward the upper corner. The pavilion still returns a clear star through the table and transparency is complete. Small natural inclusions and a light nick at one girdle corner are consistent with the VS grade.
A trillion this wide makes an efficient pendant stone, since almost all of the 2.70ct sits in face-up spread rather than depth. Brazilian topaz reaches this blue through irradiation followed by heating, which is permanent and applies to essentially all blue topaz sold today. About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
