The palest of the sky blue trillions, this 8.9mm stone reads almost silvery in places, a light airy blue with bright white flashes running through the middle of the crown. It is also the cleanest of the group, with nothing visible to the eye and only the faintest natural texture under close light, in line with the VS grade. The facets are evenly laid out and the star through the table is symmetrical. The overall effect is light and delicate rather than saturated.
Brazilian rough, irradiated and then heated, produces the whole blue topaz range, from this pale end through to London blue. Lighter stones hold their brightness well in daylight and pair naturally with white metal. A pale trillion makes a good match for a diamond-accent setting, where a deeper blue would fight the stones around it. Blue topaz belongs to December, so this doubles as a birthstone piece.
Natural sky blue topaz, VS clarity, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
