A drilled sky blue topaz briolette at 7x5mm, faceted all over in small checkerboard squares that follow the teardrop from the shoulders down to the point. The blue is soft and light, closer to pale aquamarine than to a saturated sky, and the dense faceting breaks it into many small glints rather than a few broad flashes. A drill hole through the top lets it hang directly from a wire or chain. The photograph shows four briolettes side by side, two pale blue and two colorless, so the cutting style can be seen; this listing is for the blue.
Sold by the stone, which makes it straightforward to build a matched pair or a graduated row. Brazilian topaz is irradiated and then heated to reach its blue, a permanent treatment. Briolettes are made to move, so they belong in drop earrings and pendants rather than anywhere they sit still. Blue topaz is one of December's birthstones.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
