This tanzanite oval has a medium cornflower blue-lavender color spread evenly across its broad, open face. A small natural inclusion is visible near the girdle, and the overall proportions of the cut let the color show through cleanly.
From the Merelani Hills of Tanzania, this heat-treated oval is an appealing choice for a pendant or a small ring setting.
Natural tanzanite, December birthstone, sold loose.

About tanzanite
Tanzanite is the blue to violet variety of the mineral zoisite. At 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, with perfect cleavage and fair toughness, it is softer and more fragile than sapphire, so it needs gentle handling.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. With a hardness below 7 it can be scratched even by quartz, which is found in household dust, so wipe it gently and store it on its own in a soft pouch. It suits pendants and earrings better than an everyday ring.
For your jeweler
This tanzanite is heated, and the color from heating is stable. Tanzanite should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
