Six lobes with squared notches between them give this 8.4x7.4mm snowflake a more architectural outline than the rounder versions of the shape, and the facets radiating from the center are cut long and straight so the light runs out to each lobe in clean lines. The stone is internally flawless, with nothing to see inside at any magnification, and the colorless material is completely clear. Light return is strong and evenly distributed, without a dead center. The symmetry is good, with the six lobes closely matched.
An IF snowflake is an unusual combination, since the shape is normally reserved for material where clarity does not matter much. Brazilian topaz, untreated, colorless as it came out of the pegmatite. The outline calls for a bespoke or open-back setting that traces the lobes, so it suits a maker rather than a drop-in replacement. Topaz answers to November, though a snowflake tends to end up in winter pieces regardless of the month.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
