A dark extinction pool sits at the center of this 8x7.5mm star while the five arms stay lit, and the contrast gives the shape a strong graphic reading. The points are cleanly formed and the notches between them are cut deep and even, so the outline reads as a star from any distance. A tiny pinpoint shows near one upper arm, in keeping with the VVS grade, and the colorless material is otherwise clear throughout. Polish along the long facets is bright and unbroken.
Untreated Brazilian topaz is the source of colorless material at this price. The deeper notching here makes the star outline more pronounced than on shallower cuts, which matters if the shape is the reason for buying it. Pendants and charms suit it best, since a ring setting would need to protect five separate points. November claims topaz as its birthstone.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
The star comes from fine needle-like inclusions inside the stone. They make it slightly less tough than a clean faceted stone, so treat the domed surface gently. Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
