Photographed against pale grey rather than black, this 1.52ct star cut shows its outline plainly: five sharp points, deep notches between them, and long facets running from each tip toward a small central table. The colorless material is bright and fully transparent, and the light gathers in the middle of the stone rather than scattering across the surface. A single small dark point sits just left of center, consistent with the VS grade. At 8mm across the points it has real presence for the weight.
Star outlines lose a great deal of rough in the cutting, so they appear mainly in affordable material where that is not an obstacle. The stone is untreated, Brazilian in origin. A star needs a mount made for the shape, usually an open-back bezel or a simple frame that grips between the points rather than over them. Topaz is November's birthstone.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
The star comes from fine needle-like inclusions inside the stone. They make it slightly less tough than a clean faceted stone, so treat the domed surface gently. Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
