The lightest of the colorless marquises at 0.56ct, and proportionally the widest, measuring 7.8x4mm so it reads fuller than the weight suggests. Contrast is gentle, the light moving across the crown in soft bands rather than hard flashes, and the overall impression is quiet and glassy. The material is clear and untinted, clean at VVS, and both points are neatly cut. The girdle runs level on both sides.
Width relative to length is what decides how large a marquise looks once it is set, and a wider one covers more ground for less weight. Brazil produces colorless topaz in quantity, and this stone is untreated. Set east-west across a band, a stone of these proportions reads almost as an oval. November has topaz among its birthstones.
Natural white topaz, wide marquise cut, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
