The marquise outline stretches this 0.61ct stone to nearly 8mm long on a 4mm width, so it covers considerably more finger than its weight suggests. Colorless and fully transparent, it throws a bright band of light along the long axis with the two points staying lit rather than going dark, which is the mark of a well-proportioned marquise. Clarity is VVS. Both points are cleanly finished and the halves are symmetrical.
Marquise cuts are used to lengthen a design, set north-south in a ring or east-west across a band, and they want V-claws over the points, which are the vulnerable part of the shape. The stone is untreated topaz from Brazil. Colorless stones are the most adaptable accent in a mixed-gem piece, since they pick up whatever color sits beside them. Topaz belongs to November.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
