Narrower and crisper than its wider neighbours, this 0.65ct marquise runs 8x3.9mm with sharply drawn chevrons down the center line and cleanly formed points at both ends. The colorless material is bright and completely clear, with nothing visible inside at VVS. The two halves match closely, which is what keeps a narrow marquise from looking bent. Light return is even from tip to tip with no dead patch in the middle.
A narrow marquise is the right choice for a line or a chevron design, where several stones sit end to end and the outline has to stay slim. The material is untreated topaz from Brazil. Colorless stones let a maker set the rhythm of a piece without introducing a second color. Anyone born in November can claim topaz as their stone.
Natural white topaz, narrow marquise, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
