The broadest of the colorless marquises at 8.1x4.2mm, this 0.68ct stone has a fuller, plumper outline than the narrow ones, spreading the light across a wider crown and giving strong contrast between the bright chevrons and the dark ones. A small nick sits at the right tip, exactly where a V-claw would cover it. The material is fully transparent with no tint and clean at VVS. Polish is bright along the whole length.
Marquises are usually bought in pairs to flank a center stone, and a wider outline balances a round or a cushion better than a narrow one does. The stone is untreated Brazilian topaz. The tips always want protecting, which makes a nicked point a smaller problem here than it would be on a shape with exposed edges. Topaz is November's birthstone.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
