The smallest of the star cuts at 0.86ct, and the crispest in outline, with sharply defined points and bright silvery light running along the ridges from each tip to the center. A small chip shows at the tip of one point, sitting right at the extremity where star cuts are always thinnest. The colorless material is clean and transparent, and the cut is symmetrical with even depth across the five arms. Clarity is VVS.
At 6.5x6.2mm this is the easiest of the three stars to set, since a smaller star leaves less exposed point to protect. Untreated Brazilian material, colorless without processing. Small star cuts work well in charm pendants and stacking rings where the outline carries the whole design. Topaz stands as the November birthstone.
Natural white topaz, 0.86ct star, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
The star comes from fine needle-like inclusions inside the stone. They make it slightly less tough than a clean faceted stone, so treat the domed surface gently. Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
