Bright and silvery on a pale ground, this 0.90ct round returns light in wide clean sheets with very little dark between them, which makes it read lighter and more open than the stones shot against black. The colorless material is fully transparent and the interior is clean at VVS. The 6mm circle is accurately cut with well-matched facets and a level girdle. Nothing on the surface interrupts the polish.
White topaz is a natural stone rather than a manufactured substitute, which is the reason to choose it over glass or cubic zirconia at a similar price. This one is untreated Brazilian material. It takes and keeps a bright polish, and at 6mm it fits any standard setting. Topaz answers to November among the birthstones.
Natural white topaz, bright 6mm round, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
