A well-defined star opens through the table of this 0.95ct round, the pavilion facets meeting cleanly enough to throw a symmetrical pattern rather than a muddle. Contrast is strong, hard white flashes set against dark recesses, and the effect holds as the stone is turned. The colorless material is completely clear with nothing visible inside at VVS. The circular outline is true and the polish is bright on every facet.
Symmetry in the pavilion is the difference between a stone that sparkles evenly and one that has dead spots, and it is easiest to judge in a colorless gem where nothing distracts from the pattern. Untreated Brazilian topaz is the source. A clean, well-cut 6mm round earns a visible position rather than a supporting one. November claims topaz as its birthstone.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
