Open faceting gives this 0.97ct round large clear panels across the crown, with strong white flashes and deep shadow between them rather than a fine scatter. Fine scratches show on the lower right of the crown under direct light, and a slight softness sits toward the center left. Neither registers at normal viewing distance, and the interior is clean at VVS. The colorless material is fully transparent with no tint.
Larger facets suit a stone that will be seen from a little way off, since each panel returns a bigger, bolder flash than fine faceting does. The topaz is untreated, from Brazil. A 6mm white round is the most useful size to keep on hand for repairs and replacements as well as new work. Topaz belongs to November on the birthstone list.
Natural white topaz, 0.97ct round, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is untreated. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
